The ability to be strong rests not in human might or brute force, but in stillness and belief in the goodness of God. When one is able to calm the mind and soul from controlling/striving/worrying, and simply trust in Him, strength is produced. A confidence in His strength is realized. I cannot muster up enough strength on my own...I've tried this in the past with little success. However, when I quiet my mind and quiet my soul I can focus on His love and goodness. This inevitably brings me to a place of trust and dependence on Him...and this is where true strength is found. Not in trying to "be" strong. In reality it's actually quite the opposite as I need only to "be" still and let God be strong in me. What a sense of relief and peace this brings to know that it's not up to me to be strong. I can rest in Him and know that by simply doing so I am strong. Truly it is a sign of real strength when one is able to surrender your effort to be strong on your own and depend on the Lord instead.
"Be still and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10). Again, to settle one's self before God and recognize who He is will produce strength. A healthy recognition of His nature will bring one to a place of trust every time. "God is love" (1 John 4:8). "The Lord is righteous in all His ways and loving toward all His creation" (Psalm 145:17). "For the Lord is good and His love endures forever; His faithfulness continues through all generations" (Psalm 100:5). "Fear not for I am with you; do not be dismayed for I am your God; I will strengthen you and I will help you" (Isaiah 41:10). “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls" (Matthew 11:28-29). "In all things God works for the good of those who love Him..." (Romans 8:28). This is merely a snapshot of the character of God and as we draw closer to Him our trust grows, allowing us to find our strength in who He is, rather than in who we are. The more we know Him the more worthy we find Him to be of our trust and we can quietly and confiedently come before Him in our time of need.
As my study Bible so accurately states, "A right relationship with God brings quietnes, the ability to be calm, because one trusts in him to keep His promises." For me, my strength is directly linked to my relationship with God. I'm not naturally strong-minded, so the ability to quiet my soul and trust in Him is essential. No striving. No worrying. No letting my emotions control me. Just trusting in Him while knowing He is my strength.
Do you need your strength renewed? If so, don't simply try harder, relying on your own effort and ability. Instead, do what seems to go against your natural instinct and simply be still, draw close to God and let His strength renew you. He desires peace for you, not the burden of trying to be strong. So quiet yourself before God and begin to trust in who He is and watch as He fills you with His strength...His freedom-giving, peace-producing, effortless strength.
When we struggle to overcome obstacle in front of us by our own ability, it turns out to be failed in most cases. Yet when we remember that God is sovereign, almighty Creator of us, all things seem grace and able to go through with His power(1Corinthians 10:13). The ability to be still in front of Him is not produced in one day or two. Our faith and trusts increase the time of silence and the heart of confidence in Him. We live in a world with too much noise in our daily lives. Yet God whispers to come to Him and rest under Him, as the Scripture goes. How to answer His calling is all depend on the way we relate to Him. Let us pray to remember Him and listen to Him always. And to make a choice to be still no matter how busy we get.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your blog. It encouraged me a lot!
!I was sitting here this morning and God nudged my memory to this verse. I didn't know where it was. Actually all that came to me was "in quietness and ???" So I googled it and your blog came up. DeleteHi Ryan
ReplyDeleteGod has been unfolding this text to me for a week now and I discovered your blog, spot on!!! The degree of our strength is in direct proportion to our trusting and resting in Christ. Powerful and blessed TRUTH. May God continue to speak to you and thru in profound ways
Hello "The Encourager"...so great to hear that God has been speaking to you from this passage of Scripture! So wonderful when it comes alive to us. Thanks for the message. Blessings!
DeleteGod bless you all. And may we enter into that rest. Amen
ReplyDeleteI find the seasons I am most anxious, are the Times I tend to be relying on "my own understanding." It can be so difficult to be in the trenches and not focus on the mud, how it just gets on everything. We forget that even the mud has its purpose in God's plan. If I was never muddy I would never appreciate being clean. Not to mention the Times that very mudd slowed me down preventing me from running out in front of the oncoming bus. So if don't focus on the unknown, 'the future,' and relax enough to be purposeful in the moment I then have 'moments' to relish and reflect when the future happens. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteGreat insight

Hey Julia, so glad God spoke to you through this Scripture. Amazing how He pursues us and knows what we need!
DeletePsalm 34:8 says "O come taste and see the Lord is good, How blessed is the man that trust in Him. Thank you for your blogpost, I really enjoyed reading it and it spoke to my heart.
ReplyDeleteWe live in a world filled anxiety and people are stressed, but if we become quiet before God and trust Him and with all thanksgiving make our requests known unto Him, then He shall be our refuge and our salvation.
Hey Deidre, so glad God spoke to you! And thanks for sharing that verse from the Psalms, such a beautiful truth.
DeleteThe complete verse in Isaiah is, "In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength." (in my E.S.V. Bible.)
ReplyDeleteSome versions say, "In repentance and rest is your salvation..." This is apt, for repentance, means a change of mind; to change your thinking; to turn FROM our own ways and quietly, rest in, AND FOLLOW Him. To wait for, or wait on, the Lord, means to allow Him to Speak to us through His word in Scripture and to our hearts within the relationship we have with Him, as we abide in Him as believers. It doesn't mean to sit silently, as in an eastern type meditative state. The quietness, is inner peace, that comes from Him as we trust and follow Jesus. (If we keep getting it wrong, we can actively ask: "Please show me where I'm getting it wrong or how I need to change." He will show us!!! ) Wait for the Lord (to guide) and walk in faith 24/7.
P.s. I DO understand your meaning and title though. It's as John Newton author of Amazing Grace." wrote in a letter, in 1773: "When the eye is thus single (focused on Him alone) then the whole body will be full of light, as, the simple act of living solely for God will, in general make the path of duty plain; solve a thousand otherwise dubious questions and lead to a variety of plain and obvious means. For HIS sake, by HIS strength (in this way described) you are free already with simplicity of dependence, OURS THE DUTY; HIS THE CARE. " unquote. John Newton was preacher who came to know Jesus, and followed, according to God's word.
ReplyDeleteHey Valerie, thanks for sharing your insights! Good stuff. It's wonderful how God uses His Word to speak to our hearts and to "sharpen one another." Blessings.
